Similar to 2020, 2021 started out as not a good year for traveling of any kind. Especially international travel. In early 2021 I continued doing some major work on my motorcycle. It kept me busy and still was fun and interesting. I thought I would provide some pictures of the work I did. I've done work on the bike over the years, but this was so much work and occupied so much of this year I thought I'd post this. If you know anything about BMW Airheads, you'll understand what I did by the pictures. If you don't, then you probably could care less about this page of my website anyway...

Only 4 nuts and the final drive easily slips off. |
Remove the 4 bolts holding the driveshaft to the gearbox and the 2 pivot pins, swingarm out. You got me. Technically, there were also 2 band clamps to remove. |
Disconnect the clutch cable and a few more nuts and bolts. gearbox out. |
Gearbox, swingarm, and final drive ready to take to the Airhead Airmarshal to refresh with new seals, gaskets, and bearings. |
A few more bolts and this clutch is removed. |
Before removing the flywheel, make sure the OT mark is set. |
Before removing the flywheel, make sure the crankshaft is secured (the front cover was loosely installed over this bolt). |
A few marks to indicate the correct placement of the flywheel, then remove the 5 bolts holding it in place. For argument sake, let's call this the flywheel. |
Going to pull the rear main seal and also the oil pump. |
Amazing. All this and only a handful of nuts and bolts holding this all together... Now where was that 10mm? |
Job done! This is as far in as I am going. |
New oil pump components ready to install. |
New rear main seal ready to install. |
Of course, I have the special tool to install the rear main seal properly. |
Flywheel bolts installed using the special flywheel holder tool (forgot to show that when I removed it). |
New clutch plates installed with the special clutch centering tool. |
Newly refurbished gearbox, swingarm, and final drive courtesy of the Airhead Airmarshal. |
New swingarm bearings and pivot pins installed. |
