In February 2023 my one brother and I drove to Pennsylvania to attend the BMW Airhead Super Tech Day with some sightseeing nearby. It was a long drive, but unfortunately, not that scenic, a lot of Interstate driving. I was a little surprised when the scenery picked-up when we got to Pennsylvania.
We were able to stop by and walk around the Daniel Boone Homestead in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania. This 579-acre open air museum is the birthplace of American frontiersman Daniel Boone (1734-1820). It had a number of period buildings and exhibits, such as a sawmill and blacksmith. The place had become run down by 1900 and in 1930 Daniel Carter Beard, founder of the Boy Scouts of America, was the one who took up the mantel to restore this historic place. By 1938 the property was purchased and this piece of history saved. Over the years, they have moved other historic buildings from around the area to this park.
But on to the main event, the BMW Airhead Super Tech Day in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. This is a long weekend of seminars and discussions about the classic BMW Airhead motorcycles with the 247 engines. The 2-cylinder boxer engine is air cooled (thus Airhead) with 2 valves per cylinder. Some of the seminars included a hands-on experience. There is a great deal of knowledge shared at these events by those who have the background to know their stuff. They include some lunches and dinners as part of the package too for the weekend, which makes it nice since you don't have to go out and find something on your own. Lots of lively conversation. This is my second time attending, and my only complaint, besides it not being long enough, is they have overlapping seminars, so you really need to consider which of the seminars is top of your list of interests. Some of the topics I attended were for Bing CV carbs, steering head and swingarm bearings, gearboxes, and electrical wiring. Lots of fun!
